A Range of Cooking Options

Until now, the only cooking appliance in my dollhouse was a microwave. Happily, that's no longer the case.

All of the miniature items in the next 3 photos I purchased through Amazon.

For the range itself, I started with the cardboard box that once housed my mini white noise machine. I removed part of the lid to make it look less like a folding carton and more like an oven door. Then I attached 2 magnetic dots to the back of the door and 2 more to the frame behind it, allowing the door to open and close.

The oven racks proved to be far more of a challenge. My first strategy was to cut slots into the sides of the oven with an X-Acto knife and then insert a few carefully measured pieces of gray foam sheet into the slots. Unfortunately, this resulted in the sides almost ripping in half, hence the strips of black electrical tape to cover the tears. Sigh. Back to the drawing board! This time, I took a completely different approach, creating an arch with one of the foam pieces and resting the other piece on top of it. Later, I superglued a third piece of foam to the bottom of the oven, just underneath the arch. I figured I could flatten the top rack with just a bit of weight applied to the center. After some trial and error, I determined that the 3 miniature pinwheel-shaped desserts would get the job done.

Next, I focused on the exterior. With black foam, I covered the front of the oven door, as well as the side handles, and shaped a basic griddle for the stovetop. To the bottom of the griddle I attached 8 gray foam control knobs, 1 for each of the 8 surface burners, also attached to gray foam. The burners themselves are actually plastic spacers left over from a project of my husband's. He doesn't recall what he needed them for, but that's beside the point, the point being that, almost straight away, I recognized these spacers for what they could be. And that potential is now realized.

Happy cooking!
