As you probably already know, this summer Americans and Europeans alike are experiencing record-breaking temperatures. Thankfully, for those of us with neither central air conditioning in our homes nor access to a swimming pool, there are other ways to stay cool. Here are 4 simple tips.
1. Stay hydrated.
According to Medical News Today, "drinking cool liquids, such as water or iced tea, can help reduce body temperature by cooling the body internally. The regular intake of fluids can also prevent dehydration, which can increase body heat."
The bottles below are from a set of miniature foods that I purchased through Amazon.
2. Stay in the shade.
If you have to be outdoors, try to avoid direct sunlight. You could, for instance, hang out under an umbrella.
Speaking of which, I found this video to be quite helpful:
While following the instructions for my dollhouse umbrella, I made a few modifications. For example, I traced the circumference of a bowl onto a sheet of construction paper to create a circle with a diameter of approximately 15.5 centimeters instead of 8 centimeters. Also, I folded the circle into 16 wedges instead of 12.
3. Use a fan.Never underestimate the importance of air movement, especially across your face on a sweltering day.
The material I used for the miniature fan is a cutout from Valentina Harper's Creative Coloring Inspirations: Art Activity Pages to Relax and Enjoy! I folded the cutout into an accordion, then folded the accordion in half and stapled the middle folds together.
4. Use a spray bottle.
For me, this method provides the most immediate relief. Several times a day, I spritz cold water onto my arms, legs, neck, and face. The cooling sensation may not last for very long, but, hey, that's what multiple applications are for.
To make the spray bottle for my dollhouse, I first wrapped a small strip of gray foam sheet around a miniature bottle and glued the ends using liquid super glue. The next step was to draw a tiny nozzle onto a piece of black foam sheet and carefully cut around the edges with embroidery scissors. Then, with a second piece of black foam, I formed a hollow tube and attached it to the top of the bottle. Lastly, I applied a drop of super glue to the bottom of the nozzle and placed it inside the tube.
